Motivational Interviewing: Engaging Clients into Treatment

The term “Motivational Interviewing” (MI) was first introduced by William Miller in the early 1980’s.  It was designed as a brief, non-confrontational and client-centered approach to treating alcoholic patients. This presentation will define MI and Prochasta & DiClemente’s “Transtheoretical Model” (Six Stages of Readiness to Change).  The training will explore what motivators for change are, and what six “key elements” lead to successful change.  Role-play activities will help emphasize the client-therapist relationship and how to respond to resistance. This training will focus on adolescents, couples, criminal justice clients, and the dually diagnosed client as well.  This presentation is appropriate for anyone dealing with resistance and defiance toward treatment.
