Individual Counseling Skills for Working with Chemically Dependent Patients

This course will focus on the basic counseling skills needed for working individually with chemically dependent patients. Participants will learn about these skills including: respect; empathy; genuineness; warmth; self disclosure; and confrontation through didactic presentation. This presentation will include active question and answer period s and role play exercises. Each participant will take part in the videotaping of a mock individual session outside of the classroom time. These video tapes will be reviewed in a third classroom session where feedback from the instructor and its peers will be shared. Participation on November 30 and December 2 and a video tape follow-up session on either Jan 4thor 6th is required for participants to receive credit for this training.

Bio:
Sue Sulzman, LCSW, MAC, CASAC has over 35 years experience in the alcohol and substance abuse field. Having worked in every licensed treatment modality, in a wide variety of roles from counselor to director, she brings a wealth of clinical examples to all of her trainings. Additionally, Sue worked for DAAA and OASAS and has taught at most area colleges and universities. She is presently a consultant and trainer with Consultation and Training Services (CaTS) specializing in clinical and administrative aspects of addiction.
